Backstage West | Written by Leigh Kennicot

“They saw a need, in a city as spread out and diverse as Los Angeles, tonstrengthen the community of theatre artists.”

“Artists are now serving the institution instead of the other way around.” -Anne Cattaneo

“For Cattaneo, the Lab is a response to that lack of wide-spread apprenticeship programs.”

“The whole world is filled with ‘I’ve got to get someplace’…But there’s no place to get. There are only stories to tell.” -Larry Moss

“Throughout the week, each presenter added to the one before, piling on innovative techniques, advice, reassurances and alternatives to the ‘way things are done’.”

“But perhaps the best quote from an attendee was this: ‘This week has been like falling in love again.’ They can’t help it.”

SEPTEMBER 2002

“A Pioneering Lab Head West” | American Theatre Magazine | Written by Mead Hunter

“Observing that there were few peer-driven venues for directors, Lincoln Center Theater established the New York Lab as a series of hands-on sessions that would enable directors to grow as artists and as working professionals.”

“The point for us in creating the lab is to put directors with disparate points of view in a room, light a match, step back and watch the fire burn. Every year it burns more brilliantly.” -Andrew Sachs

“The more you talk to one another, the more you gather together, the stronger everyone will be.” – Anne Cattaneo

“Theatre is not merely a diversion; it’s community, a forum, a shared space where people come together.”

SPRING/SUMMER 2002

“The Future Is Now” | Journal for Stage Directors and Choreographers | Written by Ernest Figueroa & Nick D’abruzzo

“The (LCTLab) West Coast Alumni directors saw an opportunity to change (the LA actor) focus by inspiring directors to become a seminal force behind creating theatre in the city. What better way to inspire directors than to “clone” the (Lincoln Center Theatre) Lab?”

“From its humble beginnings…, Lab West has grown to become a significant force in the development of theatrical directors.”

“A Direct Approach” | Backstage West | Written by Rob Kendt

“The point of the lab has always been in its numbers — to plant a large field and water it. Things will emerge.” -Anne Cattaneo

“The thing about theatre…is that it’s still the only place outside of maybe the canvas, where the artist has complete control, where a person can do something of value and have it be seen.” – Bob Krakower

“You have to find a way to give yourself, to be empowered individually and collectively, so you’re not waiting to be plucked out, to get the grant, to be discovered.” -Anne Cattaneo
